Storytelling through conversation

Have you seen the storytelling books where you answer a series of prompts to capture your life story?

Imagine sitting down at a computer, staring at a screen, and trying to remember the important parts of your life, all alone. Think about the hours you would spend typing and re-typing the same thought, trying to get the wording just right.

You know the results will be worth it. But instead of feeling honored, you feel overwhelmed.

You deserve a better experience of telling your story.

The Sherwood Media legacy video service is designed to guide you through the process of telling your life story, or the life of someone you love, through conversation.

Filmed with cinema cameras and professional lighting and sound, and edited like a Netflix documentary, you’ll receive an heirloom-quality video that will immerse you in the world of your loved one.

Instead of spending hours writing one story, we work with you to draw your story out naturally through conversation over one or two days.

It’s great to meet you!

I’m Elisa Trentham, the founder of Sherwood Media

10 years ago, I turned down a job offer at the largest production company in the southeast to pursue an idea that I had never seen done before - legacy storytelling.

Since then, I’ve coached hundreds of people on camera, guiding them through telling their stories with laughter and tears. And when the filming is finished, we always hear, “that wasn’t so bad!” or “you asked such great questions!” and my favorite, “thank you for holding space for my story.”

My guiding principles for legacy storytelling are Honor, Truth, and Love. I uphold these principles by listening with compassion, asking questions that draw out the most amazing details, and leveraging more than a decade of video production experience to capture each person authentically.

FAQs

  • You are never too old (or young!) to tell your life story.

We’ve captured stories of men and women at all ages and stages of life, especially for stories focused on a specific event, health journey, adoption journey, etc.

For clients who want to tell their life story, we recommend telling your story around retirement.

We understand that there is still a lot of beautiful life you will live after that, but memories of childhood, love, and career tend to fade as we age.

  • From our first Story Framework meeting to final product, the time it takes to create a legacy video ranges from 3-6 months. Many factors go into how long a video takes, including how long the video is, how many people we are interviewing, the condition of the archival materials and if they need to be processed, and your availability.

The best way to keep a project on track is to get everyone in your family on board, and responding quickly to us.

  • All legacy videos begin with our Story Framework service, which is a standalone, non-video service where we help you explore your story, values, and other details, then put together a plan for your video.

This 2.5 hour session is critical to the legacy storytelling process and includes preparation materials and a detailed story outline and video production plan. The cost for the Story Framework session is $2,500 and can be applied toward a video production package that you choose after the session.

The total cost you can expect to pay for a Legacy Video is between $1-3k per minute of video. This price includes planning, production, hair and makeup, catered lunch, editing, music, and hosting your video on a private video streaming platform.

  • We understand that nerves on camera can be a very big factor in feeling good about creating a legacy video like this.

Here are some things to remember about the process that might offer some comfort.

    • The interview is just like a conversation with someone who is there to listen and guide you.

    • The prep work that we do in the Story Framework session will prepare both of us for the camera

    • Mistakes are a normal part of the process

    • This video will be edited with our values of honor, truth, and love

    • Remember who you’re doing this for

    • Our job is to prompt you to help you remember the things most important to you
